Message from the Executive Director
What an incredible year for Canadian films at Cannes!
With three features and a short film in the Official Selection, a feature invited to the Critics’ Week, and yet another short film in the Directors’ Fortnight, 2012 is unequivocally one of the best years at the Festival in recent memory.
This year, we pay tribute to the Canadian talent at Cannes: David Cronenberg, one of Canada’s preeminent filmmakers, returning to the Croisette for the world premiere of Cosmopolis; his son, Brandon Cronenberg, making his feature directorial debut; Xavier Dolan, at just 23 years old making his third appearance at the prestigious festival; Chloé Robichaud is returning to Cannes with her latest short film; and, if that wasn’t enough, two filmmakers, David Lambert and Marie-Ève Juste, are both making their Cannes debuts.
This is a truly remarkable accomplishment for Canadian cinema that reflects the strong reputation that we’ve built abroad.
And not to be forgotten, alongside another exciting Perspective Canada line-up, we are bringing Not Short on Talent back to the Short Film Corner at the Marché du Film. For its second edition, we are offering up a program of over 25 short films from across our country, once again curated by renowned programmer Danny Lennon.
What’s more, the Canada Pavilion will once again welcome Canadian companies looking to do business with international partners.
And indeed, coproductions are a vital component of Canada’s audiovisual industry. In 2010-2011, Canada’s projects with other countries rose to over 60, representing foreign investment in excess of $230 million.
Visit us at the Canada Pavilion and you’ll quickly see why our country has become an international partner of choice.
We are looking forward to meeting you there!
